Social Media Week – What You’re Missing

One of the reasons I went into business for myself was that I got tired of hearing friends say, “I have a Facebook page. I can run a business page there.” Business pages are so vastly different than personal pages, I ended up spending a lot of time teaching people how to use them properly.

Then I thought, why am I not charging for this? So, I did. I started building a business around the concept of teaching small companies and brands how to build their image on social platforms. That was before social media became Social Media.

In the last several years, social media has turned into a marketing behemoth that most people still don’t know how to use. They have no concept of what their ROI should be – whether that means direct conversion or brand awareness. Or both. They also have no idea how to reach those goals. The problem is, it’s such a new marketing medium, it’s hard to find the right information you need because most simply don’t know what the right information looks like.

That’s what makes Social Media Week (SMW) such an amazing event for the social media business community. It’s a global event that takes place in various cities around the world over four different dates during the year. If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you know that I’ve run the social media for Social Media Week, Los Angeles for the last three years.

This week is Social Media Week, New York City, and if you’re in the city, and you aren’t here, you’re doing yourself an absolute disservice. Here are some of the things you’re missing:

Innovative Classes

SMW provides up-to-the-second classes on what’s hot, what works, and who’s getting it right. Industry leaders come out run classes and panels on such topics as ROI, Consumer Engagement, Social Awareness and Social Justice, and tech tools designed to take your business to the next level. They also bring in some truly inspirational guest speakers to discuss the impact social media has in the world today (Rev. Jesse Jackson and Pete Cashmore, to name a few).

Networking

Are you a consultant trying to build your arsenal of social tools? SMW has that covered. Looking for new clients or customers? There’s people wandering the halls for that too. Just want a chance to chat with others in your field and help build your social knowledge? Look no further. SMW is a veritable hub of like-minded industry professionals who are looking for one thing – to do business with you.

Social Tools

As I mentioned, for some of you, building your arsenal of tools is essential to staying active in the industry. Social listening, analytics, posting platforms… Forget searching the internet for what the best tools are out there; this place has them all in one spot. Companies like Social Bakers, Brandwatch, and Synthesio are all here to answer your question about what sort of social media needs you have and how they can develop a robust marketing platform for you.

OOO

Ah, every business professional’s three favorite letters: OOO. Or, more accurately. Out of Office. Just because you have work to get done, doesn’t mean you can’t do it here. Step away from your desk, and instead set up at the workstations SMW has provided for you. (Just keep in mind, those spaces are coveted. Get up if you don’t need to plug in.)
